Vintage D.C. in Photo Archive

| September 21, 2007 | 2 Comments

I love to see old photos of my hometown, Washington, D.C.  And the District’s Department of Transportation recently has posted its historical archives of Washington photos online. It’s a wonderful online gallery. In one photo, I saw that gasoline cost 27 cents a gallon in 1960!

I hope more communities follow this example.

I find old photos fascinating, even if I have never lived in the places or known the people in the pictures. There’s something about photography – the capture and freezing of a moment of light – combined with history that has a very special effect. In Britain there is a wonderful series of books of old photos of different cities and towns. I have a number of them and can spend hours looking at them.

By the way, I like your new WordPress theme.

Greetings! I agree with Barney –> old photos are very interesting. When you look at a vintage photo, your imagination takes off trying to figure out what was going on at the time the photo was taken. Also, B/W photos of yesteryear are much more dramatic and artistic than color photos of today.

Mr. Henderson, I read that you are from the DC area (as am I. check out the blog http://miltizme.blogspot.com). I recently came across a great website that invites visitors from DC to leave their memories. Currently, there are 19 pages! I am too young to remember most of what has been posted, but it’s exciting to read about what DC used to be like. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Flats/4759/
