MobileMe Rollout Stumbles

Apple’s highly anticipated rollout of its new MobileMe service to provide hopefully seamless syncing of calendar, email and contacts between your computers and iPhone is working … its first day … like a train wreck. The primary Me.com Web site (screenshot is left) has crashed, the older .Mac Web site has crashed and other Apple online systems, like the ability to download iTunes, which is an essential component, have crashed.

Not sure what’s going on because this is highly unusual for Apple. All I can guess is that consumer demand for the new iPhone 3G and its services is much greater than anticipated.

  1. Well, this was a worldwide release so volumes must be really high!

  2. Kathleen,
You are correct but it was not the first mega-launch of a product for Apple nor will it be the last. My take of it is that the company underestimated demand for the new iPhones and subsequent demand on their servers. But, then, that’s not rocket science to anticipate such things. I think it was all uncharacteristic for Apple. Incidentally, the company’s stock dropped today, 2.29%.

  3. I signed up for the service and cancelled it the same day. Very buggy and slow. I’m not sure if I would use it if it were free.

  4. Paul,

I can understand your frustration. I blame ATT, not Apple. ATT’s wireless service is slow and obsolete.
