You are correct but it was not the first mega-launch of a product for Apple nor will it be the last.  My take of it is that the company underestimated demand for the new iPhones and subsequent demand on their servers. But, then, that's not rocket science to anticipate such things.  I think it was all uncharacteristic for Apple.  Incidentally, the company's stock dropped today, 2.29%.
