“The Liberal Media …”
For as long as there have been politicians, I believe, they have blamed the media when they, themselves, get caught … either lying or in wrong-doing or with their hands in a cookie jar. Ever since the Nixon bunch was in the White House, they’ve blamed “the liberal media.” That label no longer has much credibility, I believe, in today’s digital revolution.
For starters, the “media” is too diverse. Mainstream media is struggling, due largely to competition online from bloggers and other information sources. Consequently, mainstream media – particularly respected newspapers, wire services and NPR – are doing a good job of digging deeper and covering news. The mainstream media cannot afford being bias. The exception is perhaps cable news where talking heads and pundits rule in shallowness.
The spectrum of online media, such as blogs, has grown so immense that it’s hard to put an accurate label on it. So, for politicians to wheel out the tired and overused old cliche of “the liberal media” is perhaps the height of bias and inaccuracy, itself. The politicians who are claiming this perhaps need to find another smokescreen that might help to fool their audiences.
