Just About The Perfect Laptop

| October 14, 2008 | 9 Comments

Apple introduced new updates today in its highly successful line of Macbook and Macbook Pro computers, and the improvements are authentically outstanding. What Apple has done is to make the world’s best laptops better than anything else on the market.

A battery that will power the Macbook for five hours. A bright, high resolution LED backlit display. A beautifully streamlined precision enclosure made from one solid piece of aluminum. Five times faster graphics performance. And, on goes the list.

There’s only one thing that I think is a little odd – Apple has eliminated the Firewire 400 connection from the new Macbooks. Firewire 400 is an Apple standard for data transfer, and many people use it for backing up their computers. While Apple has eliminated Firewire 400, they have added the newer and faster Firewire 800. If they have a good reason for the switch, I have not heard it.

Having a reliable laptop computer has become a necessity in my work, a computer becomes a creative extension in my writing or a valuable tool for managing treasured photos or communicating online, through email or managing a blog.

Years ago, I switched to Apple Macs because I was tired of messing with all of the inherent issues of Windows, problems that have only gotten worse with time. I have gotten far beyond the stage of even caring but I am amazed that people still use Windows and cheap computers, like Dell, that run Windows when Apple Macs are so far superior in all ways.

The new Macbooks are without comparison.

    Hi, David –

Good to read your post (I saw you Tweet about it). Ive been a huge Apple fan all my life. Are you using Keynote? It’s the best presentation software out there and is easily worth the extra premium for buying an Apple. It also works well with iMovie and all the other Apple programs.

Glad to see you’re one of the Apple junkies!

    See you,
    Jamie

    Jamie,

Wonderful to have your comment. Thank you. Keynote is outstanding, and seemingly so under promoted by Apple.
Of the new Macbooks, I see that the Macbook has become almost like a 13-inch Macbook Pro. What’s your take? Why did they drop Firewire 400?

    Hi David,
Trying again:). Thanks for your thoughts on the new macbook. I wanted to comment on your amazement that people still use windows and pcs. I really want to switch over to an apple computer. Unfortunately, at this point it’s a financial issue. I would eventually need to switch to both a macbook and an imac. On top of that, although I can run the windows platform on a mac, I’d also have to replace all my software programs as well. The cost involved with all this is prohibitive. I think that’s the situation a lot of people find themselves in. I mean honestly is anyone really happy with Vista? Still, I can dream. . .

I love it!!!! I need a new comp! I wonder if they will drop prices quickly due to the economic situation in the world.

    Dear MF,

I suspect that if you look closely at the Macbook, you will find that you will need to replace fewer programs that you might imagine. Apple loads the laptop with fully functionary, useful, and superb programs, such as iPhoto, Mail, iMovie and Calendar.

More than anything, the Macbook is such a trouble-free creative tool.

    Many thanks for your comment.

    Ms. Reyhani,

I do not predict that Apple will drop the Macbook prices. You can save some money if you qualify for an educational discount or check out prices on Amazon.com.

David – have really appreciated these recent Apple posts and share your love/admiration of all things Mac. Here’s our family’s little story about our PC-to-Mac conversion:

    Jim,

Thank you for this. So many people have similar stories of that moment when they finally throw up their hands at the Windows/Dell junk and embrace Apple Macs … because Macs work as promised and are reliable.
