Veteran’s Day
It was the image in the New York Times of President-elect Barack Obama embracing Tammy Duckworth, a veteran of the Iraq war, that will create a lasting memory about this Veteran’s Day. Ms. Duckworth had lost both legs in the war, and today is director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. They were at a wreath laying ceremony in Chicago.
What a powerful image. What must have Mr. Obama think of such a war that has maimed and killed so many? Where will he lead our country in the face of challenges and threat?
All I could think of was Ms. Duckworth’s courage to simply go on, and to achieve after losing her legs to war. I hope she comes to Washington to serve in the Obama administration and bring transparency and fairness for the treatment of veterans.
