You are absolutely correct – strategy planning starts with that 30k perspective. I call it a Situation Overview, and it must be stated in not more than a couple of paragraphs – incisive, concise but nails the big picture. One of the things I do is called the 10% rule. Most people are 10% behind schedule. But in order to think strategically, you have to get ahead of the curve so you can see things from the 30,000 foot level. If you put in a little effort, you can get 10% ahead of schedule, which gives you a chance to see the big picture. Strategy is all about the big picture. Just a thought.
