I am a recently-retired Technical Author. My pet hate in recent years is the use of the word "leverage" as a verb. It seems to be almost mandatory to use this noun in a verb sense, at least three times in any business presentation!

Not only is plain language sexy, it also saves money, time, and lives. Imagine how different the financial crisis might have been if buyers actually understood the terms of their mortgage contracts (which we all sign without really reading or completely understanding); or how cautious some of us might be if we could understand the conditions of our credit card statements (check out the back if you really want to scratch your head); or how we might have invested in a different company if we understood the proxy statements (and, in particular, the Compensation Disclosure and Analysis section); or how children could have been prevented from injury had car seat instructions been written more clearly. I could go on and on, but you get the point. Plain language is a civil right and, get this, corporations that invest in the use of plain language save thousands of hours of unproductive time wasted when consumers have to call to get someone to interpret what their written information means, and gain millions of dollars in new investments (as happened with a Fortune 100 financial services company that revised a letter to its clients for easier understanding: customers were so pleased that they invested millions of new dollars in the company). Sexy's one thing: time, money, and lives are another.
