Twitter: News Media of Choice
If you watched most cable TV news channels (and completely dismiss local news) the last couple of days, you would see only shallow coverage or mention of the explosive situation in Iran following the questionable “re-election” of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
There are riots in the streets, arrests of opposition leaders and anyone who speaks out, killings, and blackouts of communications, including text messages by mobile phones and the Internet. The Iran’s extremist religious hardliners are cracking down.
CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, who is in Tehran, is playing nicey-nice with Ahmadinejad perhaps because if she asked a solid question, she would be on the next plane out. Her outfit’s coverage is being loudly hammered by critics as less than professional.
Twitter has become the leading news source about what’s happening in Iran right now that might impact the entire world. Such news streams as Twitter’s #iranelection provide a steady, real-time flow of updates. In fact, Twitter and The New York Times are about the primary sources in America for news about events in Iran.
This is another example of mainstream news media rapidly making itself obsolete.

The US news/media typically neglects international affairs… we’re typically an apathetic audience and change channels unless Britney’s flashing someone or Brangelina adopt a new kid. Nothing new here and why I like following the BBC.
It would appear that CNN’s coverage is once again looking more and more like how it covered Iraq and Saddam Hussein. This is news, who needs facts and truth, just get the interview!
See #cnnfail on Twitter for the Twitterverse’s reaction to CNN’s poor coverage.
