How Looks Can Be Deceiving

It would be so easy to drive through Lutcher in southern Louisiana and not pay any attention to the weathered, century old, two-story storefront in bad need of paint. The building appears that it might even be abandoned, at first glance. Ah, but looks can be deceiving.

It’s called Nobile’s … and in this part of Louisiana Cajun Country, Nobile’s is legendary for its home cooked food.

Why am I writing about a restaurant … a bit far afield of my usual writing? The answer is easy – Nobile’s is outstanding. It’s like a precious culinary gem in today’s sea of mediocrity and dull, formula eating places. Nobile’s is remarkable.

A chalkboard next to the old front door announces daily luncheon specials. I had catfish that had been fried so exquisitely there was no hint of oil or grease. It came with rice and a bowl of butter beans and shrimp gumbo.

In my home area of Washington, D.C., if there were a place like Nobile’s, it would be celebrated. There’d be lines of people waiting out the front door. It would be the “must-be” hangout for celebrities. Restaurant critics would be scrambling to write about the seafood gumbo that makes your palate remember what great food tastes like. But, this is Cajun Country where great food is taken for granted.

Nobile’s is such a special place that I simply wanted to write a few words about it … just in case you are ever driving through Lutcher, Louisiana. Please say hello to Connie, Carrie, Mona Sandy and Kathleen. They … and the terrific food … give it charm and personality. Thanks!

I lived in Gramercy for 2 years and this was a restaurant my family and I frequented a lot. The chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes was too die for!!
