Technology Tools Driving Online Social Media

A number of very cool things happened the moment I clicked Publish on this blog story, and it was all happening behind the scenes and automatically on my WordPress blog.

WordPress has become the world’s online gold standard for content management sites (CMS) because of its nearly limitless dynamic qualities.  Everyone from The New York Times, PEOPLE, CNN, the Wall Street Journal and countless others to the online brand-building newsrooms we create for our clients at The News Group Net are using this software which runs under the hood of every CMS site.

It’s no surprise that an enormous cottage industry has grown up to support WordPress, from companies that create themes which define the custom look and feel to other clever software developers who create special features, called Plugins, to unleash the interactive and dynamic capabilities of WordPress.

So, when I click Publish on a new story, a bunch of things happen all at once – a special plugin instantly notifies every search engine. My new story is posted on Google in about 15 minutes! Another plugin publishes my new story automatically on Facebook. A plugin notifies Twitter … and still another plugin handles search engine optimization or SEO. And, so it goes. It’s all automatic, instantaneous and highly effective.

But there’s only so much you and I can do in the world of social media. Much of your success is driven by how often you post stories online and, more importantly, how valuable people find your words and thoughts. If you post every week or month … well, forget about any chance for a following. There is a direct cause and effect relationship between frequency of posting online and developing an audience. The more you post, the greater the audience.

You will also note “Share/Save” at the bottom of this story. That’s still another plugin created by AddToAny that gives you all the tools to share what I have written.

So, I hope you have found this to be informative and helpful.

  1. Hey, David. Which plugin notifies the Search Engines? Is it All In One SEO Pack?

    Do tell.

    Best,

    Jamie,

Yes, All In One SEO Pack for WordPress is essential but the key plugin that actually notifies search engines is XML Sitemap Generator – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/. A blog has only one file – a database – and the only true way a search engine can find what’s new is through a sitemap that creates an ever changing text file of new posts, comments, etc. WordPress does not generate such a text sitemap so you need this plugin. The XML Sitemap Generator also pings or notifies search engines of updates, instantly and seamlessly.
