At the suggestion of Doug in DC, who posted a comment today in defense of AT&T’s EDGE data network, I tested the data speed of AT&T’s EDGE network, using the iNetwork Test for iPhones that Doug had suggested. My tests were conducted in northern Virginia, between Arlington and Fairfax, just outside Washington, D.C.

Sitting within sight of the large cell phone tower at Lee Highway and North George Mason Drive in Arlington, I ran the test three times – 14.2kbps, 31.3kbps and 15.7kbps. Wow, smoke signals are faster! In West Falls Church, I got my fastest reading of 131.4kbps. In Fairfax County, the test readings varied between 34kbps and 61kbps.

In all, I ran the test approximately 20 times with nothing over 131.4kbps. The average, however, was about 30 percent of that or around 40 to 43kbps. So, yes, I suppose I overstated when I wrote, “The EDGE data stream runs at about 80k or at dial-up speeds, even though iPhone users pay a premium for the service.” In northern Virginia, EDGE is slower than that. It’s a heck of a lot worse than I thought!

Beyond that, it’s interesting to evaluate the fervency of some commenters who overlook the very clear point of my postings to dispute irrelevant minutia, such as defending the EDGE network with passion, using corporate PR talking points as, “The lifetime ‘average’ speed for users that have used that test site via EDGE is 207kbps.”

Here’s a reality: AT&T’s EDGE data network in America is indefensibly aged, outdated and antiquated.

By the way … thanks, Doug. I will continue testing EDGE and report back here.

Couple of updates on EDGE’s awful data speeds in the Washington, D.C. area today:

Tests at 13.724KBPS at 4:12 p.m.

Tests at 30.256kbps at 6:43 p.m. (akin to 1994 dialup speed)

I think it’s pretty clear that AT&T’s EDGE data network is nothing to brag about.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to write a comment, and especially to those who read my commentary.

At the sake of repeating some of my original posting, permit me to underscore the point I was making:

The Edge data network in America, acquired by AT&T during the purchase of Cingular, is “aged, outdated and antiquated.” The Edge data stream runs at about 80k or at dial-up speeds, even though iPhone users pay a premium for the service. These speeds are far slower than consumers expected when the iPhone was introduced in 2007.

The cellular phone systems in America as a whole are so far behind the sophistication of the rest of the world that it is not even accurate to call them, “third-world,” because most so-called third-world countries have better mobile phone service.

While visiting Germany and Switzerland in August, I was astonished by how fast my iPhone original surfed the Web and downloaded email. Subjectively comparing my iPhone’s performance with a new iPhone 3G, it appeared to be on a par.

Upon return to America, I had an opportunity to ask an AT&T supervisor of the company’s global network to explain the performance boost I had experienced. He said that when an iPhone original from America is used on the more sophisticated and much faster data networks in Europe and around the world, it will operate at comparable* 3G speeds. He said, “It will be ‘forced’ to run at 3G speeds.” If there is a single error in my original posting, it was that I should have used the word, “comparable.”* Mobile phone data network speeds are relative and ever-changing, influenced by traffic and demand. Nonetheless, the iPhone original operates at speeds that rival an iPhone 3G in such context, according to this AT&T expert, and that was my personal finding.

The iPhone original was not made for 3G, and I did not say that it was. It is, however, a quad-band phone capable of working on much faster networks around the world than exist in America.

I’m not sure whether this update posting will be a help. I hope so. From reading all of the comments, I have come away with the conclusion that there exists considerable confusion over what is defined as “Edge” in Europe, and that the Edge network is indeed considered 3G. Quite frankly, I don’t care. The fundamental fact remains that an iPhone original from America downloads data astonishing fast when used in Europe.

An iPhone original in America would perform much faster were it not for AT&T’s current agonizingly slow Edge data network. Even AT&T experts confirm that fact.

I might add that Ameicans traveling internationally are better advised to use a Blackberry for emails due to AT&T’s expensive iPhone international data roaming charges.

* “Comparable” defined as “like, equal, equivalent, similar.”

Here’s a headline for you — the original iPhone works on 3G data networks, and works just as fast as the new iPhone 3G. In fact, the iPhone original is a quad-band cell phone, and capable of operating on 3G networks.

But in America, however, original iPhones are throttled back by Apple’s software and forced to operate only on AT&T’s aged, outdated and antiquated Edge data network where the data stream runs at about 80k or at dial-up speeds, even though users pay a premium for the service. If you take an original iPhone anywhere else in the world, it will rock along at blazing speeds on the latest 3G networks. I have personally experienced the fast service while using my older iPhone in Europe on the Vodaphone and Orange mobile networks.

According to my sources inside AT&T, when Apple collaborated with AT&T on the original iPhone last year, the old Edge network (which AT&T acquired from Cingular) was the only data network available; the 3G network had yet to be built. AT&T’s 3G data network, in fact, is still under construction and only available in major metropolitan areas in the U.S.

But, it’s a different story in Europe, Asia, Russia, the Middle East and many so-called “third world” countries which all have state-of-the-art high speed 3G+ data networks. Use an older original iPhone there, and it will rocket along. That’s why original iPhones are today in such great demand – because they are 3G-capable and can be hacked to run on those networks.

In most parts of the world, mobile phone companies have been smart and have collaborated to build one universal high-speed wireless phone system. Except here in America, we have a hodgepodge of aging cell phone networks. Not one standard but many. And, that results in uniformily poor service for customers of nearly any cell phone company, except perhaps Verizon, which has invested in building a strong network.

Incidentally, the reason the new iPhone 3Gs are dropping so many calls at the aggravation of customers is simply because AT&T’s 3G network lacks the high speed capacity. When an individual cell phone tower, for example, in a city gets overloaded with iPhone 3G calls, it bumps them back to the slower Edge network, dropping the call. Apple’s upcoming software fix that we should see in a week or two will make the iPhone 3G transition smoother to the Edge network, like taking a giant step backwards for customers who had paid for faster, not slower, service.

We cell phone customers in America pay for the shortsightedness and quest for short-term greed of the mobile phone companies, which have stupidly invested in building multiple networks rather than one universal national network to serve customers. The poor cell phone service, my friends, is only in America.

There is no question it was ambitious … but Apple is the kind of customer-focused company that will get any problems all resolved and make everyone happy.

My issue is not with Apple but with AT&T Wireless, service provider for the iPhone in the U.S. Even before the iPhone came along, AT&T Wireless was delivering mediocre cell phone service, and it hasn’t gotten better.

I have an older iPhone that uses AT&T’s Edge data network, which is agonizingly slow. Edge’s speed is similar to old-fashioned dial-up Internet access. Actually, the Edge data network is as slow as sending smoke signals. Yet, during a recent vacation in Europe, I found that the European equivalency of Edge that is offered by mobile phone companies, like Vodafone, is astonishingly fast on my older iPhone! It’s night and day faster than AT&T’s Edge. Heck, if we had that speed here in the U.S., there would be no need for 3G.

Incidentally, if you have an iPhone and are thinking of using it abroad, my advice is to use a Blackberry. The problem is not Apple but AT&T – AT&T’s international data roaming plans are expensive for a tiny amount of data transfer. Heck, you could exchange a few dozen photos and get socked with a big bill because you exceeded AT&T’s puny data allocation. You are better off using a Blackberry which has international data included.

Bummer that Apple got tied up with AT&T. But it was the only option here in America, where cell phone service is third-world quality compared with much of the rest of the world.

It’s now been two weeks since Apple debuted the new iPhone 3G and made available version 2 of iPhone software for owners of previous iPhones. Even though I am an Apple enthusiast, the new version of iPhone software has ranged from problematic to aggravating to a disaster.

If you own an earlier iPhone and have not upgraded to the new software, my strong advice is not to … not yet. An iPhone with version 2 of the software operates slower … in fact, sluggish; experiences weird behavior, like flashing on and off when you are trying to turn it on; and is prone to freezes.

But the real problem has been with Apple’s new MobileMe wireless sync/email service. It is being called “MobileMess” in this story by David Pogue in the New York Times.

What I find really odd is the astonishingly poor handling of communications on this issue by a company that normally sets the standard for clarity and transparency in corporate communications. It’s almost as if Apple’s legendary ability to communicate has either become tongue-tied or reverted to old-fashioned crisis communications … stonewall and say, no comment. There seems to be a lack of leadership within Apple over handling communications.

Apple, this is a real crisis that mandates timely and open communications. Who is minding the message? It’s one of those challenging times when the reputation of the company could be impacted. Stop saying that you have no comment because that, in itself, is a shocking comment.

Despite Apple’s enormous customer loyalty, poor communications can quickly tarnish that reputation equity and will be costly to repair.

AT&T Wireless, the cell phone company, is one of those big, faceless corporations that bumps along and manages stays in business despite itself, I believe. Case in point is the fiasco over the announcement on AT&T’s Web site that Apple iPhone users would get free access to AT&T’s 17,000 Wi-Fi hot spots around the country.

The AT&T announcement said:

“AT&T knows Wi-Fi is hot, and free Wi-Fi even hotter, which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers free access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi hot-spot network with more than 17,000 hot spots, including Starbucks. Now users can relax and access music, e-mail, and Web browsing services with their favorite blend in hand from the comfort of their favorite location.”

It was not true … not a word of it … even though the announcement stayed on the company’s Web site for weeks. What’s more, no one at AT&T is accepting responsibility for the lie.

The lie was compounded when an AT&T spokesman told CNET News, “We have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone. The webpage was posted in error and is being removed.”

Who vets the content on the AT&T website? Clearly, AT&T is a company where no one is accountable.

A few months ago, Apple made its development software available at a reasonable price to anyone who wished to develop a useful application for the iPhone. That move, in and of itself, has been significant and unprecedented in the technology industry and enormously successful. It has resulted in countless applications for iPhone users which are distributed through iTunes, either free or for a nominal charge.

Among the new and free iPhone applications are news resources from The New York Times and Associated Press to keep you up to date. There’s an app called, “NowLocal,” that delivers local news and events. There is a new Facebook app that’s simply terrific and another one called, “BoxOffice,” where you can find what’s playing at the local movies and reviews of flicks. My favorite so far is “Dial Zero” that provides the phone numbers of hundreds of businesses and services and how to hack past voicemail hell to reach a live person.

The list of neat iPhone apps just goes on and on.

I suspect both ATT and Apple are celebrating with sales despite yesterday’s significant glitches with activating new iPhones and installing the new software on older iPhones.

I had no problems when I synced my first generation iPhone to update with the new software from Apple. My wife’s iPhone was a different story – the backup had gotten corrupted, causing her iPhone to lose configurations on email. But … and this is a BIG difference between Apple and most other companies on the planet … an Apple tech provided her with professional guidance to solve the issues within a few minutes. Tell me another company that has such incredibly good customer technical support!!

Such solutions-focused interface with customers is how Apple has earned the respect of a loyal base of fans who are … well, almost cult-like … in their enthusiasm for Apple and products, like the brilliant new iPhone. It’s really sort of like … a love affair with Apple.

The scene (left) at the ATT store in downtown Washington, D.C., this morning was similar to that at other ATT and Apple stores across the nation this morning – lines of people waiting to buy Apple’s new iPhone 3G.

Apple has intentionally kept the iPhone off the market for the last month, both to build near-hysterical customer demand and media frenzy, and to eliminate the previous problem of people taking advantage of the company’s liberal 30 day money back refund to trade-in an older model. Smart and gutsy corporate move by Apple on both counts.

As a typical Apple enthusiast, I was online earlier this morning to download the iPhone 2.0 software update, which gives my earlier generation iPhone just about all the bells and whistles as the new 3G model … except better wireless speed. My iPhone uses ATT’s ancient EDGE network that delivers about 70k, akin to old-fashioned dial-up speed. The new iPhone 3G is supposed to be about three times faster but even that doesn’t set the world on fire. At the risk of sounding less than “WOWed,” I am less than WOWed by the new software features. I will leave reviews to the professionals but I thought … (yawn) it was considerably less than what I had expected.

Sorry, Apple … but I still love you.

While the iPhone 3G is front-page news, more details are coming out about the cost of the faster 3G service … that is, if it is available where you live.

Here’s the story – the price of the entry level iPhone 3G is $200, one-half the price of the original iPhone that debuted a year ago. Why the lower price? Because AT&T Wireless, the service provider in the U.S. is subsidizing each iPhone. But you, the user, will ultimately pay the difference, and then some.

For the iPhone 3G, the data plan costs $10 more each month than the data plan for the original iPhone, and that does not include any text messages. Texting will cost another $5 a month. My six-month-old iPhone has 200 text messages included. So, right off the bat, you will be paying an additional $360 for the joy of playing with an iPhone 3G over the term of a 24 month AT&T contract.

But then, is it worth it? Absolutely if you are someone who needs to stay connected and informed.

A source at Apple tells me that a cosmetic difference between the original iPhone and the new iPhone 3G is that the new model will have a plastic case. Buyers will have a choice of black or white plastic.

That could be a issue to some iPhone purists – the brushed metal case of the original iPhone is pretty classy looking. On the other hand, anything Apple creates is classy. Besides, the metal is slippery in the hand while plastic might be easier to hold.

The iPhone 3G is expected July 11. As I have previously written, it is the software update for my original iPhone that I am looking forward to on that date.

Readers of this blog and friends have asked my thoughts about the new Apple iPhone 3G that was unveiled, as expected, by Steve Jobs last Monday. Well, I admit that I’ve been dragging my feet a little while I learn more about the new iPhone. Now, a few words:

1. I believe David Pogue of the The New York Times when he said there will soon be three computing platforms – Mac OS X, iPhone and Windows. Even my six month old iPhone is a brilliant concept and years ahead of any Blackberry or wireless device. I think we have only scratched the surface of how powerful and influential the iPhone will become as a communications tool.

2. Since I have an iPhone, I don’t feel an urge to get the 3G model because ATT is really the weak element in the equation — while ATT’s 3G will be faster than Edge, ATT has been slow in building its 3G network. So, when 3G is not available, a new iPhone 3G will revert to the slowness (snore) of Edge. ATT really needs to get its corporate act together and recognize the future of the iPhone.

3. What I am most excited to see is the new iPhone software update that’s expected July 11. I suspect it will put older iPhones on pretty much the same par as the new models.

4. If you don’t have an iPhone, the new 3G model is half the price and twice as fast, according to Apple, so you have no excuse not to get one. I recommend iPhone, without hesitation.

5. My wife and I used to lug around Mac laptops while traveling on respective business trips. Now, we just take along our iPhones. While we still love our Mac laptops, the iPhone is a pretty effective replacement while on the road … and a heck of a lot lighter.

Any questions? Please let me know. Thanks. By the way … I plan to write more as I learn and hear more about the iPhone 3G.

A acquaintance writes on Facebook today, “Dear Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer: Vista sucks! Vista is slow on my fast Lenovo x61 with 4GB RAM! [expletive deleted] Driving me to Mac!?”

The opinion he expresses is but the latest in a chorus of complaints and news headlines about the significant shortcomings of Windows Vista, the latest and more seriously flawed operating system from Microsoft. Windows – regardless of version – is simply an outdated computer operating system, notorious for decades for instability, crashes, lockups, viruses and other time and money consuming technological ailments.

Why, then, do organizations continue to invest in Windows and computers that run only Windows? I know of a cash-strapped organization that recently made another sizable investment in new Dell computers with Microsoft Windows even though the organization has spent a fortune on simply keeping them running. As someone with many years experience of suffering with the problematic Windows in work environments, I can say that there is no excuse for any organization to continue wasting money and wasting productivity on Windows, other than to perpetuate internal bureaucracies. I think the reason they suffer Windows is job security for the IT people. There is no other intelligent reason … and that reason is certainly not intelligent.

There is an alternative that works – Apple Mac. Macs are stable, issues-free computers that work for you as opposed to causing aggravation. Macs run most of the computer programs as Windows, including Microsoft Office and many others.

This coming week is going to be a big one for Apple – the new G3 iPhone will be announced plus new sales promotion deals through ATT that will make the iPhone more affordable; an updated operating system for current iPhone users; and, details on Apple’s new OS X operating system, code-named “Snow Leopard,” that should be available in January 2009.

And, guess what?!! Apple will again make terrific headlines because the company has earned respect, and a reputation for products that work, trouble-free!
