New images of New York City just before Hurricane Sandy struck
Like many people not only in America but around the world, I have watched and monitored the effects of Hurricane Sandy on the New York City metro region. I have family living in Manhattan, without electricity and heat, and they are in my thoughts constantly.
Gil Lavi, the noted photographer, is a friend who splits his professional time between assignments in New York and Israel. His talents are in demand, whether the assignment is to photograph a celebrity, a VIP or breaking news.
Fortunately, Gil – one of the world’s most talented photographers, in my opinion – ventured out in the streets of Midtown just before the hurricane hit New York late Monday. It was already raining heavily, and most New Yorkers seemed to be heeding warnings, leaving streets practically empty.
I really appreciate that he has shared some of his photos here. His images provide yet another view of Hurricane Sandy.

As we learn each day that more people lost their lives to this storm and many will be without shelter and power for days if not weeks, I am troubled by the decision of NYC Mayor Bloomberg to decide that the NYC Marathon will go as scheduled on Sunday. The photos displayed today of two huge generators brought in not help those affected by the storm, but to power the judges’ and other’s tents flies in the face of common decency as many women, children and men find themselves without power and food. Shameful!
